Travel is a gift from God! It’s an absolute joy to visit new places, meet new people, and make new memories. But no matter you go, it’s important to invite God on your journey. After all, God knows your plans before you do. He also happens to be the best travel planner, guide, and consultant you could ask for! 100% reliable, too! 😉 If you’re traveling as a Christian, here are 10 faith-rooted tips to help you stay grounded in God’s love, will, and Word wherever you go.

Hi, that’s me! Taken at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland 🙂
1. Ask God for Direction
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (James 1:5)
Before you travel, take time to inquire of God’s will for your trip. Then genuinely listen for His guidance. Often, a sense of peace (or a lack thereof) can help you determine if it’s the right decision. If you sense His peace, ask God to prepare your heart for the place you’re visiting. After all, you are an ambassador of Christ, tourist or not!
Quick tip: Ask God for help with travel planning! Personally, I pray for His help when I book flights, hotels, car rentals, tours, or restaurants. He is faithful to lead us in the right direction.

“The Lord directs the steps of the godly.” (Psalm 37:23-24)
2. Bring a Pocket Bible
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
Whenever I travel, I carry a pocket Bible in my backpack! The Bible is your very own spiritual GPS. Also known as your “God Positioning System.” Without it, it’s easy to stray off course—spiritually, emotionally, or otherwise. Travel has a way of testing us, bringing highs and lows. Flights get delayed, bookings fall through, and frustrations arise. But the Word of God helps us to respond like Him, with patience, peace, and grace toward others.
Quick tip: If you’re short on time, Amazon has pocket Bibles that can arrive in 24–72 hours. I’ve included a few affiliate links below. Any commission I earn helps support my blog!

3. Be Open to Divine Appointments
“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” (Peter 3:15)
As you embark on your trip, let God know you’re open to divine appointments. These serendipitous encounters serve to advance His Kingdom, and give us the special opportunity to provide encouragement, comfort, prayer, testimony, or tangible help to someone in need. They can also encourage us, help us, and educate us, too!
Quick tip: Be friendly, open, and genuinely curious about the people you meet. Pay attention to who He brings your way and then let the conversation flow naturally. Trust that the Holy Spirit will do the heavy-lifting!

Storytime! Do you see the nail in the tire?
In Ireland, Jacob and I got a flat in an unfortunate spot near Lough Tay. Our accident happened on Easter, so none of the auto shops were open on Google. Miraculously, one small shop was open on Apple Maps. A kind man in his own garage helped us repair the tire. We had an incredible conversation. God turned this unfortunate stop into a memorable moment!

Thankfully, we made it to Glendalough! Tire woes behind us!
4. Look for Ways to Give Back
“Serve one another humbly in love.” (Galatians 5:13)
Travel can sometimes be associated with self-indulgence. But when we’re followers of Christ, we want to share God’s love first and foremost. Whether you’re interacting with taxi drivers, hotel staff, tour guides, local shopkeepers, or restaurant servers, look for ways to bless them. Remember, we are not called to be served, but to serve. Here are seven simple ways you can give back:
- Say “thank you” to staff
- Give a stranger a kind word or compliment
- Pray with or for people God puts on your heart
- Support local artists, shop owners, and vendors
- Tip generously whenever you can
- Share a meal or conversation with a local
- Stay respectful of the culture
Quick tip: Budget a bit tight? The most affordable way to give back is to pray for people you encounter:
- For God’s love, blessing, and protection over everyone you meet
- For those in spiritual need to encounter Jesus Christ
- For people in physical need to be provided for in miraculous ways
- For local Christians and missionaries to receive boldness, strength, and courage

5. Connect With the Body of Christ
“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)
If you’re traveling as a Christian group, you are essentially a mini church on the move. You can enjoy the companionship, encouragement, and spiritual support of fellow believers. But if you’re traveling solo, take comfort in knowing that God is with you. Stay connected to a Christian support system back home and ask fellow believers to cover you in prayer.
Quick tip: Attend church in the town you’re visiting! We are all members of the same spiritual family. Looking back, you will cherish the church service(s) you attend.

6. Stay Aware of the Atmosphere
“God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
Don’t hesitate to ask God for discernment so you know which paths to take versus avoid. If you sense heaviness, confusion, or oppression in a location, pray for guidance and take the necessary precautions. Sometimes, this may mean setting boundaries, relocating, or adjusting your itinerary.
For example, you can:
- End the night early to stay safe and sober
- Leave a location that makes you feel spiritually uneasy
- Refrain from souvenirs, tours, or experiences that honor foreign gods or promote false beliefs
Quick tip: If you’re uneasy or weary, remember your Armor of God. “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” (Ephesians 6:11)
- The Belt of Truth: Stay rooted in God’s truth to avoid spiritual deception.
- The Breastplate of Righteousness: Guard your heart by living in righteousness.
- The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace: Be ready to share your faith in Jesus Christ.
- The Shield of Faith: Believe in God’s promises to fend off the enemy’s attacks.
- The Helmet of Salvation: Protect your mind by meditating on your salvation.
- The Sword of the Spirit: Use the Word of God to resist evil and proclaim God’s truth.

7. Rejoice & Rest in God
“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalms 118:24)
God is the author of joy! He takes delight in the things that light us our hearts. As we’re traveling, we can thank Him for all the fun, excitement, and adventure that fills our days. Even more, we can rejoice knowing that each new day (or new place) is another chance to know Him better. Rest easy in Him as you travel for His presence is your peace.

“Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin.” (Luke 12:27)
Final Thoughts
If you’re traveling as a Christian, ask yourself: How can I bless others, bear witness to Christ, and serve God on this trip?
God will work through you to bear good fruit. Pray for guidance, stay rooted in His Word, and walk intentionally with the Holy Spirit each day. Remember, even the smallest acts of love can have eternal impact.
