Athens’ city centers were jam-packed with historical action. The ancient Greeks spared no expense in creating grandiose public temples and buildings with elaborate iconic and corinthian pillars. Athens is very unique as the center of the city is entirely preserved. The white temples pose an interesting contrast to the outward bustling city. Out of all the sites I visited, my favorite was the Acropolis. It was amazing to see the ruins of one of Europe’s great historical empires in person. The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel that contains incredible historical monuments such as the Parthenon. The Parthenon is regarded as the most famous structure within the Acropolis because it was constructed in 447 BC by the Athenian Empire. The temple itself was dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom the ancient Greeks regarded as the city’s patron. Read more about my trip to Greece by checking out my article on Santorini, Greece: 3 Days Exploring the Island by ATV.

I was also able to visit the Ancient Agora of Classical Athens, which contains many ruins from an ancient Greek gathering place. Here, I visited the Temple of Hephaestus, the Stoa of Attalos, and the Altar of the Twelve Gods. Seeing the stoa and the scattered ancient ruins was an experience I’ll never forget. If you decide to visit Athens, I’d highly recommend bringing lots of water and light clothing as it can get extremely hot during the summer. On the few days I visited, the temperature ranged from 90 to 95 degrees!
