As we transition into spring, it is essential to tailor your skincare routine to the changes in your external environment. The appearance of your skin can be impacted by environmental factors, such as warmer, sunnier days, and airborne allergens that stem from grasses, flowers and trees. In spring, we are also spending more time in the sun, leading to more sun exposure and sweating, which can clog your pores. By choosing the right products and ingredients tailored to your skin’s changing needs, you can maintain a healthy complexion throughout spring. In this blog, I will highlight five spring skincare essentials to add to your skincare routine!

Spring Skin Care Essentials

1. Switch to Double Cleansing

Spring gives everyone more opportunities to enjoy the sunshine, whether on vacation, relaxing on the patio, or hiking outdoors. However, sun exposure causes the body to sweat more often, which in turn, clogs your pores. Clogged pores can prevent your skin from fully absorbing your skincare products. Therefore, double cleansing is essential for any spring skincare routine! This simple trick removes all the impurities, makeup, sunscreen, and excess oil that can build up on your skin in the sun.

What does double cleansing involve?

The first cleanser is usually an oil-based cleanser or cleansing balm that removes all of the grime that has settled on your skin throughout the day. After you remove these oil-based impurities, you can proceed to your second step.

The second cleanser is usually a water-based cleanser to help prevent clogged pores, breakouts, and dullness, leaving the skin feeling fresh, clean, and balanced. This process helps the active ingredients in your cleansers absorb more effectively, which leads to better results in terms of hydration, brightening, and anti-aging benefits.

1. Superberry Dream Cleansing Balm

The Youth to the People Cleansing Balm effectively removes all makeup, impurities, and daily buildup on the skin that accumulates throughout the day. This balm also hydrates the skin to protect your skin from drying out.

2. CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser

I alternate between the CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser and Youth to the People Superfood Gentle Antioxidant Cleanser, both of which effectively remove any excess product or buildup that your first cleanser did not eliminate. These gentle cleansers will leave your skin feeling more supple and hydrated by maintaining your skin barrier integrity and preventing dryness or irritation.

2. Exfoliate Regularly

If you are not exfoliating once a week, it’s important to start doing so. Adding in an exfoliant will remove the dead cells that have accumulated over time on your skin’s surface. If these dead cells remain on your skin, they can clog your pores and lead to a more dull complexion. In spring, try exfoliating your skin twice a week. If you are new to exfoliation, start with once a week, and be gentle!

1. Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant

This product contains salicylic acid, which penetrates your pores to remove impurities. I noticed a big difference in my skin within the first week of using this. My skin was taking up more product, leaving my skin feeling clean and refreshed.

3. Apply Sunscreen

If you visit a dermatologist, you will always hear about how important sunscreen is. Now more than ever, it is vital to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. We have all seen the horrific photos of those who never used sunscreen, and have sun spots or, even worse, cancer. A simple way to apply SPF is to use a moisturizer with SPF or try a skin tint. I switch between these two types of sunscreens depending on the day.

1. Supergoop Glowscreen

When I don’t want to wear makeup for days, I use Supergoop Glowscreen. This product provides a perfect layer of PSF protection while leaving a beautiful glow to my skin. Whether used alone or under makeup, this tinted sunscreen gives your skin an instant radiance.

2. Ilia Skin Tint with SPF

When I do wear makeup, I opt for the Illia Skin Tint with SPF. The skin tint is a perfect base to build upon. Plus, it’s versatile! You can build with it or leave it as a stand-alone on your skin. This product is also vegan and cruelty-free––a big bonus when shopping for skincare.

4. Don’t Skip Moisturizing

As we transition into the spring, your skin may begin to get more oily. However, it’s essential not to ignore the importance of moisturizing! We often overlook the fact that your skin needs to stay hydrated in the springtime. This season, opt for a lighter moisturizer. Look for oil-free or gel-based products that provide hydration without clogging your pores.

1. CeraVe Daily Moisturizer

This simple yet effective moisturizer provides the perfect moisture level in the springtime. It is designed to be easily absorbed into the skin, making it an ideal base for layering with other skincare products. I have combination skin and use this moisturizer year-round, adding an extra moisturizer if needed during the drier months.

5. Spritz Your Skin With a Hydrating Mist

One of my favorite spring skincare essentials! Try a hydrating mist –– perfect for infusing extra hydration, nutrients, and antioxidants into your skin. I recommend applying your hydrating mist in between your cleanser and toner for the best results. This helps the rest of your skincare products to absorb even more effectively. Right now, I’m loving Tata Harper’s Hyaluronic Acid Floral Essence

Final Thoughts

Spring is often overlooked when it comes to your skincare routine. As we transition from winter to spring, take the time to adjust your skincare routine and consider implementing these five spring skincare essentials. Since the skin is the largest organ, it must be protected year-round! Heavy, thicker moisturizers that provide necessary protection during winter may feel too suffocating in spring. Plus, they can potentially lead to clogged pores, impurities, and breakouts. Transitioning to lighter, more breathable formulas is important for maintaining your skin hydration without amplifying congestion.
